One Planet Living - what does it look like?Tuesday 2 March Thursday 4 March Facilitator: Guest speakers: |
One Planet Living provides a vision of a truly sustainable way of life and a practical framework for achieving it. This workshop will use a real site, the Bicester eco-town 300 home demonstrator, to help you explore how the One Planet Living framework can be applied. By putting yourself in the shoes of one of the residents, whether a school kid, a working couple or a retired person, you can have a go at planning the buildings, services and facilities that should exist in the development to help you live a sustainable lifestyle. Kevin McCloud will attend this session (on Tuesday 2nd March from 4pm to 4.30pm) to talk about how he has applied a One Planet Living approach to his Hab housing developments in Swindon. |
Shifting stubborn embodied carbonTuesday 2 March Facilitator: |

As buildings become more energy efficient in their operation, the embodied carbon of the materials used in construction is rapidly becoming a major aspect of the overall carbon impact of the project. This workshop will demonstrate how intelligent choices of materials and construction methods can have a big impact in reducing embodied carbon, helping you to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes and earn BREEAM credits. |
How do you sell a car free development?Wednesday 3 March Facilitator: |
Car-free developments are cheaper to build and offer enormous environmental benefits, but how do you overcome resistance from politicians, neighbours, and home buyers? This interactive workshop will examine the barriers to building without parking spaces, discuss ways to dispel the myths that surround such schemes, and come up with innovative ways to promote car-free and low car developments. |
What's food got to do with it?Thursday 4 March Facilitator: |
Growing and transporting food represents nearly a quarter of a UK resident's ecological footprint - more than home energy, transport and consumer goods. In the media the talk is all about local food, food miles, and growing-your-own. Local food production is even a requirement of the eco-towns PPS, how can this be achieved? This workshop, using one of the eco-town sites will highlight the role that clients, architects, and designers can play in helping to reduce the ecological impact of food in new developments, from enabling deliveries to encouraging growing. |
